We are in Mantua at the beginning of the 15th century. Rigoletto, the Duke of Mantua's court jester, is doing everything he can to protect his daughter Gilda from the notorious womaniser. But the Duke seduces Gilda and has her abducted by his courtiers. She falls in love with him and Rigoletto feels betrayed and wants revenge on the Duke. He instructs Sparafugile to murder the Duke during the night, with tragic consequences.
